Pottery, paint and pixels

The things I make with my hands when the laptop is closed. Finished pieces, works in progress, and the ones that didn't survive the kiln.

A speckled white stoneware bowl on a wooden table
Speckled stoneware bowl · Glaze test no. 4 — the one that made me order a full jar. Two coats, iron flecks coming through where it thinned at the rim.
A ceramic mug with a visible crack near the base
The mug that cracked · Thick at the base, dried too fast, split along the foot in the firing. I keep it on the shelf as a reminder to throw thinner.
Unglazed bowls upside down on a work table
Trimming day · Before the glaze: eight leather-hard bowls upside down waiting for feet. This is my favourite part and nobody believes me.
A watercolour of misty green hills
Coorg from the homestay · Watercolour, painted on the veranda in about twenty minutes before the rain came back.
Three unglazed terracotta planters in a row
Planter set · Unglazed terracotta, three sizes, drainage holes I remembered to cut this time. The middle one is very slightly oval and I've decided that's fine.
A digital illustration of a monstera leaf
Monstera study · Drawn on the iPad while sitting in front of the actual plant, which is the only way I get the leaf holes right.
A small gouache painting of a balcony in evening light
The balcony at 6pm · Gouache, roughly postcard sized. One of thirty from the month I painted the same corner every evening.
An acrylic painting of a small curly-haired dog
Poodle portrait · Acrylic, a commission for a friend's dog. First time painting fur and I'm still not sure I've got the ears.

Notes from the wheel

I started pottery at a weekend class two years ago and kept going. I’m not good yet, which is largely the point — it’s the one thing in my week with no metrics attached to it. I write up what I learn in the journal, cracks included.

Prints & pieces

A few of the digital studies may end up as prints, and I occasionally sell bowls when the shelf gets full. I’ll post here and on Instagram when that happens rather than running a shop.
