Himachal, ten days

The long one. A sketchbook full of mountains and a plan to go back.

Snow-topped mountains above a valley town

The longest trip I’ve taken in years, and the first in a long time where I didn’t open the laptop once.

Ten days across three valleys, mostly slowly. Two nights in places I’d meant to stay one, because the light was good and I was in the middle of a drawing.

What I filled

A whole sketchbook. Thirty-odd pages of mountains, most of them done in the twenty minutes before my hands got too cold. Some of the best drawing I’ve done, entirely because there was nothing else to do and nowhere to be.

What I learned about packing

Layers, obviously. But also: one pair of shoes is a mistake and three is a different mistake. Two, one of them properly waterproof.

The mini power bank earned its place — cold kills a phone battery in about four hours and I was using mine as a reference camera all day.

Going back

December again, and longer if I can arrange the work around it. There’s a valley we drove through at dusk that I’ve thought about roughly once a week since.
